Hope and Faith, which is which?
Hope and Faith
Hope and Faith are two very different things. You can have Faith and Hope together or you can have one or the other, but I find it very difficult to have Faith without having Hope.
I seem to have Hope more strongly often times than I have Faith. Although it is not that I don't have Faith, it is just that I have Faith that God can do all things, sometimes I just don't have Faith that He will do some of those things for me.
Obviously I am unworthy and therefore I usually fall down in my Faith because of my undeserving human self. But I always Hope the God will answer the way I want Him to. And that is another issue with Faith.
The bible says that if we have Faith as big (or small) as a mustard seed, we can move mountains. Faith in what? In God most likely, but will God, just because we asked, move a mountain when it shouldn't be moved? Will God give me a job that I think is perfect for me, even if it isn't, if I have enough Faith?
What happens when two baseball teams are playing in a championship game and both are asking God in Faith, to let them win? Who wins?
And yet, do believe in praying for specifics. I want God's will to be done but I believe He expects us to ask for and pray about our needs specifically in Faith.
When the bible tells us to have Faith, is it talking about Faith that God can or Faith that God will?
Are trusting and believing the same as Faith? I'm not a bible scholar by any means but I did find that the words Trust and Belief in the bible are often also Pistis as found below.
In Strong's Concordance I found this...
I often feel like the father of the boy with the evil spirit in Mark
9:23 who said "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!". (persuade
me perhaps)
The Greek word Pistis seems to say that God gives us the Faith we need when we need it.
Hope is easy. Unless things are really going downhill fast, I most always have Hope. We need to have Hope. Without Hope, life is miserable. Hope tells us that things can turn around in a day or an hour or even with just a phone call. Hope is glorious. Faith is hard unless we understand that Faith comes from God not the other way around.
In Strong's Concordance I found this...
The original word for Hope is ἐλπίς (sometimes written ἐλπίς; s2. much more frequent in the classics, and always in the New Testament., in a good sense: expectation of good, hope; and in the Christian sense, joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation: Acts 23:6; Acts 26:7; Romans 5:4; Romans 12:12; Romans 15:13; 1 Corinthians 13:13; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 Peter 3:15;
Christian you decide. I would love to have your thoughts on this.
Questions:
How do you pray? Specifics or God's will or both?
Do you have Faith that God can do what you ask?
Do you have Faith that God will do what you ask?
What about Hope?
And What about Love? Ah that's a blog for another day.
REMINDER - when you read scripture always know who is speaking and who they are speaking to. The bible is a mixture of literal truth, parables, examples, exhortation to specific groups of people for a specific issue, prophecy for the future, and writings about things in the past. Jesus wants you to have a relationship with Him even if you don't believe or understand every word of the bible.

In Strong's Concordance I found this...
The original word for Faith is pístis be persuaded, come to trust; faith. Faith (pistis) is always a gift from God, and never something that can be produced by people. In short, pistis ("faith") for the believer is "God's divine persuasion" – and therefore distinct from human belief (confidence), yet involving it. The Lord continuously births faith in the yielded believer so they can know what He prefers, i.e. the persuasion of His will (1 Jn 5:4).
The Greek word Pistis seems to say that God gives us the Faith we need when we need it.

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would
draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those
who seek him.
Mark 11:22-24 ESV
And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you,
whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’
and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will
come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever
you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be
yours.
James 2:19 ESV
You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

For nothing will be impossible with God.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not
your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no
one may boast.
Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and
do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of
things not seen. For by it the people of old received their
commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by
the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that
are visible. By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice
than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending
him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he
still speaks. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see
death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he
was taken he was commended as having pleased God. ...
Ephesians 2:8 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
That your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
James 2:14-26 ESV
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does
not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is
poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them,
“Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things
needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it
does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I
have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show
you my faith by my works. ...
James 2:24 ESV
You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
James 1:5-8 ESV
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously
to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in
faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the
sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not
suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a
double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that
whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig
tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into
the sea,’ it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will
receive, if you have faith.”

Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but
through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus,
in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the
law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness
that comes by faith.

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to
think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with

assigned.

with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also
obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we
rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our
sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance
produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put
us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through
the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I
shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me
beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of
righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley

with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control,
and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,

Christ.

be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may
discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and
perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to
think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with
