Christians make mistakes

For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. James 3:2

Christians make mistakes.  Everyday we do, say, or think something that we know is not Godly.  It may just be frustration at the car in front of us.  It may be a judgmental thought about someone we come across or something we hear.  We might join in with office gossip or whine about our boss. We might be angry at our husbands or wives or think of a way to not tell the exact truth.

There are many ways we can make mistakes and not react, think, or love like Christ.  We stumble, but we don't fall because He holds us up.  He brings this instances to our minds and reminds us that we are striving to be like Him in every way.  No one is perfect.

Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins. Ecclesiastes 7:20

So what then?  Should we just accept that we make mistakes and not worry about it?  No, we need to let our conscience guide us and ask God to help us overcome these constant mistakes.  If we want to be more like Christ, we can not do it alone.  We need His Holy Spirit to speak to us each time we are about to make one of these mistakes so that we can have self-control, which is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus ascended back to heaven He said He was leaving us a helper/comforter.

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. John 16:7

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26

We often forget to rely or call on the Holy Spirit when we are struggling with mistakes and sin.  Remember that Jesus not only died on the cross so that we would be forgiven and have eternal life with Him, He also did not leave us alone to fend for ourselves.  Call on this Helper, ask Jesus for more of His Holy Spirit to guide you.  Ask for forgiveness when you fail and keep moving closer to God.

One last thing.  Everyone around you is having the same problems.  Try to give them some grace to make mistakes just like you do.

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye"  Matthew 7:1-5
