Recognizing sin
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23
The original sense of New Testament Greek ἁμαρτία hamartia "sin", is failure, being in error, missing the mark; especially in spear throwing, offense, wrong-doing, misdeed.
When we think of sin from a Christian perspective, we concentrate on the last two above i.e wrong-doing and misdeed, but the others are important too. Failure in following Christ's teaching, being in error in how we behave or what we say, and missing the mark in our beliefs can and do have serious consequences.
The bible is pretty clear when talking about sin. Take a look at James. It couldn't be simpler.
So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. James 4:17
So knowing that we all sin and that knowing the right thing to do and not doing it is sin, why do we struggle?
I think it is because we are selfish and perverse generation that wants what we want when we want it.
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 2 Tim. 3:1 -5
This certainly describes our world today. "It's all about me" is the slogan for today. Past generations did not have time to think only of themselves. But we have so much technology and freedom to choose what we do and where we go, that we concentrate all our efforts on ourselves and that leads to sin.
We all struggle with sin at times. We must recognize and acknowledge our sin and ask God for forgiveness. we must be determined not to repeat our wrong-doings.
If you are one who is continually sinning and know that you are, you need to seek help. Help comes in many forms, admitting you have a problem, seeking counsel, medication, prayer, changing your lifestyle, giving up some of the people you hang out with. Whatever your particular struggle is, as James says in Chapter 4:17 if you know the right thing and you fail to do it, for you it is sin. Please seek help so that you can fully experience Christ's abundant life. The joy of the Lord is much better than whatever it is that you are struggling with.
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. John 8:34
