The Christian's Unknown Future

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15

One of my biggest struggles in life is not knowing what the future holds.  I want to know what I will be doing for the rest of this year and the years to come.  I have thing that I want to do and accomplish but I don't know when or if those things will ever happen.

I know that none of us are guaranteed tomorrow but it is so hard not to think and plan and hope and wish for what we think would be the perfect future.

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9

But are the things we hope for really the perfect future?  God knows what is best for us and for those around us.  Remembering that He is not only drawing me closer but is also working on everyone influenced by me to bring them into a relationship with Him is difficult.

If I have to give up my life or my future in order for someone else to spend eternity with God, would I do whatever it takes?

And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. John 2:17

There is a serious illness that runs in my family and I might get it.  Truthfully, I have asked God to spare me and the rest of my family from this  future.  It scares me and there are so many things I want to do.  But if God asks this of me, I will try not to be afraid.

What does your future hold?  No one knows.  Accepting that God loves us and will always take care of us is faith.  Enjoying each day as it is is trust.  Planning for the future is human.  Accepting what happens is peace.  Pray that the Holy Spirit will give you His fruits and have joy in each day as it comes.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.Jeremiah 29:11
