What can we do for God?

Just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. 1 Cor. 10:33

Our lives are all about work, bills, fun, family, and friends.  We spend everyday either working to support our lifestyle, spending time doing things, cleaning house, paying bills, going out, cooking, eating, taking care of family, pets, etc.

This is how most people live.  And as Christians we worship God, ask Him to forgive us our shortcomings, and ask Him to give us wisdom, strength, health, happiness, love, and whatever else we need and want at the time.

This is all ok.  God, our father, loves us.  He sent His only son to die and rise again for us and so that we could have abundant life.

Do you sense a "but" coming?  Yes, there is one.

But, God is also working in this world to bring about His plan.  He wants everyone to accept Him, follow Him and love Him.  His plan has been in the works since Adam and Eve first sinned.  Why is it taking so long, you ask?   Well, it is because He has to use us to bring it about.

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

If we don't take time to ask God what we can do for Him and if we don't participate in bringing about His plan, will it ever happen?

You've heard and know that God has a plan for you.  Well, who is going to bring it about if no one around you is doing what God wants them to do, even you?  If God has a plan for everyone, then everyone should be working to do what God needs us to do to bring about that plan for everyone.

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16

"But what can I do for God?" you ask.  I can't go out and witness on the street corner.  (Some of you can and do)  Some are called to that and they listen.  Bless you.  But what about the rest of us?

So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 2 Cor. 5:9

Let's think of some things we could do for God.  Remember you need to ask God what He wants you to do for Him.  These are just some examples.

You could hand out salvation tracks
You could give out water bottles or other things to those who are begging at the street corners
You could befriend a new person in your church and take them to lunch
You could teach a Sunday School class or volunteer in the nursery
You could invite your neighbors over for dinner
You could write a blog
You could encourage the cashier in the store that looks tired
You could ask someone if they are ok just to show you care
You could visit the sick in the hospital
You could take your pets to retirement homes
You could make sandwiches and take them to those living on the street under the bridges
You could regularly donate to a Church or Christian organization
You could donate your clothes instead of sell them, even better, give them to someone who needs them
You could help someone with childcare
You could pay someone's phone bill
You could pick up a home-bound person and take them to church or grocery shopping

This list could go on and on.  Ask God today "What can I do for you, Lord?" instead of asking God to do everything for you. I believe we all need to have a purpose for God so that our lives don't totally revolve around ourselves.  We need to follow Christ's example.  And when I say need, I mean we really, physically and spiritually need to do this.  Life is empty without doing something for God.

We can make a difference in this messed up world.  Each of us can make a difference to someone.  Next time you are praying and asking God for this and that, remember to ask what you can do for Him.

When a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Proverbs 16:7
