Why is the Bible so important?

We read the bible, we quote the bible, we say we believe in the bible, but why?  Why is the bible so important?  Why should we read it everyday and believe what is said in its pages?

You must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.  2 Peter 1:20, 21

The bible didn't come from men, like some other "religious" writings did.  It was inspired by God and written down by many people. This is why we say it is the word of God and being the word of God is the reason we should read it.  We read so much during the week.  We read on social media, we read books, newspapers (some still do), recipes, scrolls on TV, calendars, grocery lists, and more. Why is it so difficult to read the words of God?

God's words are the most important words we will ever read. The gift of faithfulness from the Holy Spirit tells us that we need to read or hear the words of God. We need to be faithful to God's direction and that comes from His word.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16

God's word is how we know about His plan.  It is how we know about the dangers that face us because of Satan's fall.  It is how we know about the old testament sacrifices that led us to Jesus as the 'once for all' final sacrifice on the cross for our sins.  It is how we understand that through His death and resurrection, we can stand before God as new people.  From the beginning of the Old Testament to the Crucifixion of Jesus in our place, we can see how God brought us back from the fall, taught us about His love for us, and ultimately gives us eternal life with Him if we believe and accept this gift and ask Him to forgive our sins.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

So  God had people write His words to teach us.  He used people like you and me to write His story and now He uses us to read, learn, and teach His story to those who don't know.  We are very concerned about a lot of things but it seems that people learning about God is not one of them.

I heard an illustration where a teacher took gold fish out of a bowl of water and put them on the table in front of her students.  The students all rushed to gather the gold fish and put them back into the water so they wouldn't die. There are dying people all around us and yet we just ignore them.  Maybe we should think of them as gold fish out of water.

Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4

You know how, when you were a small child, you were taught the holy Scriptures; and it is these that make you wise to accept God's salvation by trusting in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:15

You might say that the Bible is contradictory in places, but if you know who was being written to and why, you will find that is not so.  You might say that the Bible is not literal and some will say it is absolutely literal but the Bible is both literal in places and not literal in places.  As Jesus used parables to teach, so the Bible uses literal and not literal words to help us understand.  Again it is important to understand who the story is about and what is happening at the time.  We need to accept the entire Bible, not just the parts that we like.  We need to ask the Holy Spirit to help us to understand as we read.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.  He will bring glory to me(Jesus) by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. John 16:13, 14

Reading the Bible or even listening to an audio Bible is very important to our well-being and our relationship with God.  If no one ever listened to you when you speak, I would imagine that you don't have much of a relationship.  Dust off your Bible and put is next to your chair or bed.  Read a little each day and let God be part of your life.
