What is the Holy Spirit for?

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.  John 14:26

God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit, also known as the Holy Trinity, is really outside the realm of human understanding.  The three work as one and each one works as an individual unit, but always doing the work of God.  In reality, when one works, they all work.

Humans are described in the bible as also being a three in one being.  We are body, soul and spirit. We were created in the image of God.

But what is the Holy Spirit for?  Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would be a helper to us after He was crucified, raised and ascended again to the Father. He said to the disciples that the Holy Spirit would bring to their remembrance everything that He had taught them.

The Holy Spirit will do the same for us, but first we have to read Christ's words.  We need to study the bible and listen to our ministers in order to hear the words first before they can be brought back to our remembrance.

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.  John 16:7-15

Jesus also said that the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin.  In a sense the Holy Spirit is our conscience, telling us right from wrong.  Our conscience can be ignored but as a Christian we need to listen to what God is telling us through His Holy Spirit because we will be judged in the end.  The world ignores their conscience and follows the darkness.  When we, who are of the light, are around them, they don't like it because the light of the Holy Spirit illuminates their sin and brings it to their awareness.

And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.  Romans 5:5

The Holy Spirit also fills us with the love of God. When we accept Christ as our savior,  knowing that He saved us by dying in our place, we receive the Holy Spirit and are filled with God's love.  Since the Holy Spirit is actually God, we have received all that God is and has to offer us.

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26

Since Jesus is no longer here in the body, He is here in the Spirit.  He is walking next to us all day no matter where we are or what we are doing.  He is, not only God, but also our bridge to God through His death on the cross for our sins.  He makes us new and softens our hearts.  If your heart is hardened, the Holy Spirit is not being able to reach you.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

The Holy Spirit also gives us His fruits when we ask for them and helps us to also become part of Him so that we can produce this fruit as well.  If we seek the fruits of the spirit we will also  show these fruits to the world.  We can share these fruits and help others to seek them.

The fruits that the Holy Spirit provides build upon each other.  If you have love and joy, you will have peace.  If you have peace, you are more likely to be patient and kind.  You will be more able to live in the world if you are faithful to God, gentle and exercise self-control.  Everything God puts together is miraculous in the way it works. Seek the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:15-17

The Holy Spirit is here to help us know the truth.  He is here to bring Christs words to our remembrance, to convict us of our sin, to fill us with God's love, to make us fruitful, and to help us follow His example, doing the right things as Christ would have us do.

The Holy Spirit is God.  The Holy Spirit is Christ.  Call on the Holy Spirit to help you grow and mature in your relationship with Christ.  Everything God offers is free to us because the price was paid by Christ in advance.  Remember and be thankful.
