Christ's Burden is Light

28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Christ said His burden is light and that we will find rest for our souls. I don't know about you, but my soul could use some rest. So why is living a victorious Christian life so hard? Why are our burdens so heavy?

If Christ said His burden is light, then this is true. Therefore, the heaviness we feel and the burdens we add to our Christian walk is our own fault. Christianity is simple. Sometimes, the church, the denomination, the leadership, or the world make it difficult. Praise God that what is actually required of us to be saved from eternal death is really very simple. If we believe in the next four things, we are saved and can have absolute assurance that we will be spending time in heaven with God. If we add to these a close personal relationship with Him, our time here on earth will be blessed with peace and contentment.

1. Believe there is a God.

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. (Romans 1:20)

We are without excuse if we cannot see that all things must be created. Things do fall fully formed from the sky. If all things are created, then there must be a Creator. The Creator, who we call God, is Spirit and is not subject to time or space. He has always been and will always be.

 2. Believe in the virgin birth of Jesus, God's son. He was born of a virgin tells us that He is and was God in human form. This was prophesied many years before His birth.

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)

3. Believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

We lost our relationship with God through sin, but God made a way of escape for us by sending His son to die for us. Life is in the blood, and without a blood sacrifice, there is no forgiveness of sin. Christ was the last and final blood sacrifice for the sins of the world, and we must believe in Him to be saved from eternal death.

Belief is more than just acknowledging that He is. Belief, as used in the bible, is faith and respect. So we need to believe, accept, and respect our Lord Jesus Christ. We can have a close personal relationship with our Father, and this is what He desires. It is not about religion. It is about a relationship with Christ.

4. Believe in the resurrection from the dead of Jesus. Jesus' resurrection also proves His Holiness and tells us that we will also be resurrected to live eternally with Him.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, (John 11:25) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (1 Peter 1:3)

Having certainty that we have eternal life with Christ is easy, but some are not sure. After we have decided to accept these truths, of course, we will want to live the best we can for Him, and He wants to be in our lives as our friend, brother, and Father. If we commune with Him, He will comfort, lead, and guide our lives and help us through difficult times. He will give us joy when the world is far from joyful.

The rest of the Bible is taken up in explaining the whys and wherefores of this simple Christianity. If rules and regulations of the church or requirements of the leadership are adding burdens to us, we can be assured that they are not necessary for our salvation or for our relationship with Christ. There is so much valuable information in God's Holy inspired Word.  Some of our denominations' requirements might be nice, but they are not necessary for salvation.

All that is required is faith in God the Father, Jesus Christ, His Son, and the Holy Spirit that guides us. We may not understand it all, and that is just fine. God will reveal to us what we need to know when we need to know it.

This is a very simplified explanation, but we want our relationship with God to be simple, loving, peaceful, and easy. We have enough trouble in this life—Christ's burden is light. Let's not make it heavy.

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
